Former Suns head coach Frank Vogel is finalizing a deal with the Dallas Mavericks to become their lead assistant, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Vogel, 52, will join Jason Kidd’s staff in Dallas. While with the Los Angeles Lakers, Kidd worked as an assistant coach on Vogel’s staff from 2019 through 2021, and the pair won a championship together in 2020.

Vogel will step in for Sean Sweeney as Dallas’ lead assistant after Sweeney was hired by the San Antonio Spurs as their associate head coach.

Last season, Vogel worked with the Mavericks as a coaching consultant after he was fired by the Suns.

Vogel lasted just one season in Phoenix. He finished with a 49-33 record and led the Suns to a sixth-place finish in the Western Conference during the regular season, but 11 days after the Suns were swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 2023-24 playoffs, he was ousted.

Vogel signed a five-year, $31 million contract with the Suns in 2023 and is still owed for three more seasons.

Prior to his time in Phoenix and Los Angeles, Vogel led the Indiana Pacers from 2010-16 and the Orlando Magic from 2016-18.
