Norris adamant: ‘If I want to win, we need rain’ ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Lando Norris delivered a masterclass in wet-weather qualifying at Interlagos on Saturday, but the McLaren driver knows that his impressive pole position could count for considerably less if the skies clear for Sunday's Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

The Briton produced the decisive lap when it mattered, beating Mercedes duo George Russell and Kimi Antonelli to the top spot in treacherous conditions.

It was his third consecutive pole at the Brazilian venue and another timely demonstration of his ability to exploit a slippery track.

But Norris was under no illusions about the challenge awaiting him over Sunday's 71 laps. McLaren's outright pace remains a concern, particularly against a Mercedes outfit that has looked formidable throughout the weekend.

And with newly crowned world champion Antonelli starting alongside him on the front row, the poleman knows he’ll need the weather to become his strongest ally.

Confidence makes the difference in the wet

Norris stopped the clock at 1m 27.470s before conditions deteriorated further, leaving several rivals unable to improve their times as the rain intensified.

The session rewarded confidence and precision in equal measure, with nine different teams represented in Q3. Norris believed his ability to trust the MCL40, rather than simply attack the conditions recklessly, proved decisive.

“I had good confidence in the car – that’s always a good start,” the Briton explained.

“You want a car you feel you can push on. Especially with how wet it was, every bit of confidence you can get is a good thing and rewards you heavily.

“Obviously through Qualifying you start to see the pack even out and the pecking order go back a little bit to who has a good package, who has the most confidence. But into Q3, it was a lot more about who could push the most and just make the least mistakes.

“You had two laps, two opportunities to put things together, get a good lap, get the tyres in a good window – but also to then not make a mistake, to brake later, to accelerate harder but not lock the tyre and not have wheelspin.

“In these conditions it’s so easy to make these little errors which can be costly. My lap was just very clean and, in the end, that’s what you want.

“I couldn’t have done any more today. It was just a very nice, clean lap in, no mistakes – that’s what I managed to do.”

Antonelli threat makes rain essential

Norris's satisfaction with Saturday's achievement was tempered by a rather less encouraging assessment of McLaren's prospects in the dry.

With Russell's five-place grid penalty promoting Antonelli to second, the reigning champion-elect will have a formidable Mercedes challenger breathing down his neck from the start.

And Norris is under no illusion about the difference in performance between the two cars.

“If I want to win tomorrow, we need rain,” he insisted.

“I think in the dry conditions, we don’t quite have the speed of our competitors, so it’s nice that in the rain I feel like I can make a bit more of a difference.

“I make up for a little bit of the lack of speed we have compared to them. I need it to stay raining all night.

“Obviously I want a good race, so I don’t mind a little bit of rain through the whole session. With Kimi behind, who’s probably the quickest this weekend, it’s going to be a tough challenge.”

That is hardly the triumphant message McLaren would have wanted from its pole-sitter.

Norris has secured the best possible starting position, but he knows that holding off Antonelli over a full race distance could be an entirely different proposition if Interlagos dries out.

Red flag thwarts Piastri's efforts

Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri's difficult afternoon compounded McLaren's contrasting fortunes.

The Australian was eliminated in Q2 for the second consecutive weekend, qualifying 12th after Rafael Camara's late red flag prevented him from completing another attempt. Grid penalties elsewhere will nevertheless lift him to 10th.

“Definitely at the beginning of the session, it was tough,” Piastri said.

“I think towards the end it was definitely getting easier, but you needed a couple of laps to get temperature into the inters.

“It was very, very challenging. We’ll try and make our way forward tomorrow. I think [the order] could be pretty jumbled. There are obviously a few grid penalties around so we’ll have to wait and see what it’s like.”

For Norris, however, the immediate concern is rather more straightforward: keeping Antonelli behind him.

He has the pole, the confidence and the opportunity to deliver another Interlagos victory. What he desperately wants now is for the Brazilian weather to cooperate.
