Urban Meyer has just about seen it all during his career as a college football coach. More recently, he’s been a part of FOX’s coverage all season long, and he joined Colin Cowherd recently to discuss the major topics of the upcoming season.
During that conversation, Meyer was asked for his list of the top 3 rosters in the country, without having to consider the roster. Instead of predicting the eventual champion, Meyer simply listed his group of the most talented rosters in the country, and that consisted of Texas, Ohio State and Penn State.
From that group, it is James Franklin and the Nittany Lions who Meyer described as “following the lead” of the past 2 title winners because “they have more seniors.”
“Think about this, Colin, that I never had a chance to coach 4th-year players, and if I did, it was very rare,” said Meyer. “And the difference between a 4th-year player and a rookie or a freshman is night and day. You’re coaching grown-ass men. That’s a men’s locker room compared to a young person.
“Watch out for Penn State. If Drew Allar can really improve at quarterback, I agree with you, they have the best backfield, they’ve got an offensive line that they can’t wait to get on the field.”
While Meyer was not tasked with predicting the national title winner, it’s no surprise that his list coincides with the best 2025 national championship odds. According to BetMGM, Texas and Ohio State are the co-favorites to win it all, coming in at +500. Penn State is not far behind at +800, and fans can keep up with all the odds at the best sports betting apps.
The team sandwiched in the middle that Meyer omitted is Georgia, with Kirby Smart looking to get his program to bounce back after a disappointing conclusion to the season a year ago. The Bulldogs are +650 to win it all but must replace some key production on both sides of the ball, including breaking in new starting quarterback Gunner Stockton with the offense.
