Georgia’s Mount Rushmore of QBs ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

Georgia has become a juggernaut under coach Kirby Smart.

But the Bulldogs’ history with great quarterback play spans multiple eras. From Smart to Mark Richt to Vince Dooley to Wally Butts, all of the top Georgia football coaches of all-time have worked with strong quarterbacks.

Wednesday is Georgia day during the SEC Network Takeover event, which runs all the way up until the start of SEC Media Days on July 14. That makes it a good time to celebrate all things Bulldogs.

Over the past few days, we’ve looked at the following schools’ QB Mount Rushmores:

Alabama Arkansas Auburn Florida

Without further ado, here are the 4 legends who make up Georgia’s Mount Rushmore of QBs:

Aaron Murray (2010-13)

It took playing in Mike Leach’s famous Air Raid offense for Will Rogers to finally break Aaron Murray’s all-time SEC record for completions. Rogers finished his Mississippi State career with 1,301. Murray had 921 during his time with Georgia.

However, even in that pass-happy system, Rogers couldn’t take down Murray’s all-time SEC records for passing yards (13,166) and passing TDs (121). He threw for 3,000+ yards in 4-straight seasons spanning 2010 to 2013, despite suffering a season-ending ACL injury in 2013.

Murray’s Georgia teams didn’t have a ton of success, losing the 2011 and 2012 SEC Championship Games. But Murray has quickly become one of the most underrated QBs in SEC history. He doesn’t get mentioned in many conversations about the all-time greats, even with his career accolades and records. But he’ll never be forgotten in Athens.

Stetson Bennett (2017-22)

Look, Bennett won 2 national championships as the QB of the Bulldogs. That alone is enough to put him on this list. But the former walk-on who actually left Georgia at one point before making his storybook return became the stuff of legend in Athens.

Bennett became a heck of a quarterback during his career. He’s a true success story when it comes to showing how a player can develop from walk-on afterthought to SEC legend.

Bennett was really only a full-time starter for 2 seasons, the 2021 and 2022 title-winning campaigns, but he’s 4th on the Bulldogs’ all-time passing yards list with 8,429 and 5th with 66 career TD passes.

David Greene (2001-04)

Greene was the all-time SEC passing leader back when his Georgia career ended. His 42 victories were also an NCAA record when he graduated. He threw for 11,528 career yards, which is still good for 4th all-time in the SEC.

Georgia actually had a bit of success under Greene, too, winning the 2002 SEC Championship Game over Arkansas, 30-3. A rivalry game loss to Florida that season was all that kept Georgia from potentially making the national championship game. Instead, the Bulldogs had to settle for a win over Florida State in the Sugar Bowl and a No. 3 final AP Poll ranking.

Greene was one of the best left-handed quarterbacks in SEC history, along with a guy we’ll include in tomorrow’s Kentucky QB Mount Rushmore (that’s called a teaser).

Fran Tarkenton (1958-60)

Tarkenton became a great dual-threat QB in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings, but he wasn’t a huge runner at Georgia. He scored 4 rushing touchdowns in 1959 and followed it up with 4 more on the ground in 1960, amassing fewer than 100 total rushing yards each year.

But his 1960 season was No. 1 in the SEC by nearly every passing metric available. And his 1959 season, when Georgia won the SEC title, was also elite by SEC standards of the time.

The 1959 Bulldogs finished 10-1 overall and claimed the No. 5 spot in the final AP Poll after beating Missouri in the Orange Bowl. The 1960 Bulldogs struggled to a 6-4 overall record. But Tarkenton was a first-team All-SEC selection each year and deserves a spot on this list for his career accomplishments in Athens.
