Fredonia sprinter’s life saved by quick-acting coaches after heart stops during track meet ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Two local coaches took lifesaving action during a track meet at Nazareth University this past winter. In February, Fredonia sprinter Jacob Winn suffered cardiac arrest while warming up at the indoor track facility.

Nazareth assistant coach Zach Ferrara and Geneseo assistant coach Christian Johnson immediately performed CPR and used an AED. Their quick response allowed Winn to be transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he spent 38 days.

“I woke up in the ICU room at Strong, and my father was at the end of the hospital bed. And then I asked him what happened, and he said you had cardiac arrest at the track meet,” Winn said.

“It was rewarding to know the things we put in motion, the trainings we did with our coaches, paid off. And in this particular instance, it resulted in an awesome situation, a miracle if you will,” Johnson said.

Winn now has a pacemaker and is back home in Niagara Falls.
