The Syrian Ministry of Economy and Industry issued a decision to halt the import of used cars starting Sunday, June 29, with temporary exceptions.
The decision, which was published by the ministry on its Telegram account on Sunday, June 29, included exceptions for trucks, tractor units, public works machinery, and agricultural tractors not exceeding 10 years old, excluding the year of manufacture.
The decision also exempted passenger buses with more than 32 seats, provided they do not exceed four years of age, excluding the year of manufacture.
The decision allowed for the import of new, unused cars, provided that the year of manufacture does not exceed two years, excluding the year of manufacture.
Importers who purchased cars before the date of the decision are exempted, provided they prove the chassis numbers at the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports by no later than July 6.
At the end of January, the Syrian Ministry of Transport allowed the import of cars into Syria under certain conditions, stipulating that all types of cars and vehicles could be imported as long as they were not older than 15 years.
The decision has faced significant criticism since then; some experts believe it will impact car prices and cause losses for their owners, in addition to draining foreign currency resources on non-essential items.
On May 7, Transport Minister Yarub Badr stated that the government is in the process of taking measures aimed at reorganizing the import of cars into Syria, after the country was flooded with modern cars following the reopening of imports a few months ago.
Badr added that after opening the import door, a large number of modern cars entered the market to compensate for the shortage in the local market; however, Syria cannot continue with this influx of a large number of vehicles, according to the minister’s statement.
Recovery at the expense of small traders
The import movement of cars into Syria has revitalized the local car market in terms of the availability of supply and the introduction of cars that the market was deprived of during the rule of the ousted regime, which halted their import to prevent draining foreign currency.
However, the decision has also negatively affected some small car dealers in the market, according to interviews conducted by Enab Baladi earlier, particularly those who do not have the capacity to import European cars. They lost the value of their inventory, as prices plummeted to less than half, and the movement of purchasing old cars ceased after the arrival of newer models in the country.
