A longtime favorite holiday event in Chicago will be absent once again.
The Chicago Union Station Polar Express Train Ride will not operate in 2026, marking the third year in a row it won’t take place.
“We regret to announce that THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride will not operate in Chicago at Union Station in 2026,” organizers said in an Instagram post. “We understand this event is an important experience for families and hope to return in the future.”
No additional details about the decision were immediately released.
The event, set to the sounds of the popular Christmastime movie “The Polar Express,” gives passengers the chance to relive the classic story on a one-hour train trip to meet Santa. Over the last five years, the popular even faced a slew of disruptions and cancellations, including the COVID pandemic in 2020, and a shortage of railroad crews in 2022.
While the event won’t take place in Chicago, it will be held in other locations in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
The Polar Express will run at the Monticello Railway Museum near Champaign from Nov. 13 through Dec. 6, according to the museum’s website. In Wisconsin, the event takes place Nov. 20 through Dec. 13 at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay.
Meanwhile, at the French Lick Scenic Railway in Indiana, riders can hop aboard the Polar Express on select days between Nov. 6 and Dec. 23.
