PROFESSIONAL bull riding has adopted a team format, and it’s much closer to the big four American sports leagues than you might think.
After the PBR Camping World Team Series’ inception in 2022, the New York Mavericks joined in 2024.

Mavericks general manager Chris Pantani explained how the new team series is just like any other team sport.
“So it’s the same as any main type sport you look at,” Pantani said.
“It’s just a Western version of that sport. The competition is five on five.
“Think of it as a hockey overtime or a soccer shootout. Away team goes, home team goes. It’s five players compete for an aggregate score.
“So you have games, you have practices, you have standings, you have world champions, everything is just like a regular or mainstream type sport.
“You can relax, enjoy with your family, look up and you can see a score. And it’s two separate dugouts.
“The teams are separated on the arena so you can actually follow and see what’s going to happen at the same time.”
The PBR team series has plenty of other features similar to the NFL or NBA.
There is a free agency, trades, and an injured reserve system. The team series even has a draft, where young talent can be brought in to bolster a squad.
“The new rider draft this year was three rounds and whether you might have had three picks or you could have had six picks like one team,” Pantani said.
“We only had two because we traded one of our picks away just before to grab one of the players on our team.”
Teams compete in a 5-on-5 format, where each rider’s score is added together and the team with the higher total score wins.
“New York versus Kansas City. New York rides two of their bulls in their matchup of five,” Pantani continued.
“We have 160 points. Kansas City rides one for 84 points. We win. It’s 160-84. So fans can follow.
