Luke Humphries certainly lived up to the mantra of no pain, no gain.
Humphries scooped up the US Masters with an 8-6 win over Nathan Aspinall in the final but now has an X-ray to look forward to when he returns home due to a thumb issue.
Humphries won his first World Series event in nearly 320 daysThe 2024 world champion sustained the injury during his walk-on ahead of his first round victory over Stowe Buntz when a fan grabbed his thumb and pulled it back.
Although Humphries managed to play through the pain for the remainder of the tournament, he conceded it needs medical attention sooner than later.
“My thumb is incredibly swollen,” Humphries said.
“It’s hard to play through. I was struggling with the grip. I couldn’t hold my thumb in the same position.
“I don’t want to make it all about that. The guy when he pulled my hand back, he really hurt it.
“I’m going to have to go home and get an X-ray. I don’t think it’s broken as it doesn’t hurt to squeeze it.
“It’s not in good shape, it’s incredibly swollen. I said to my family I’m going to give it everything, if I injure my hand, I don’t care.
“I tried my best and it was good enough so I’m really pleased. I wasn’t ad my best but I managed to win.”
Humphries’ victory was just his second of his career on the World Series and in 2025.
After his opening win over Buntz, Humphries cruised to a 6-2 win in the quarter-finals over Danny Lauby, who had sent defending US Masters champ Rob Cross packing in the first round with a shock 6-0 whitewash.

For Humphries, being the last man standing in a tournament at the iconic Madison Square Garden was a dream come true.
He may have had his parents to thank too, as his win in New York City continued a brilliant trend of never having lost when they have attended his matches this year.
“This is the real special one for me on the World Series,” Humphries said.
“This is the biggest one, this will always be the most iconic venue darts is going to go to or I’ll ever play at. It’s one of the top five venues in the world. So they’re very special.
“When I came here two years ago, I always dreamt of winning this one.

Perhaps Humphries will have to bring his parents along to New York City next year, especially if he gets his wish of having the US Masters be played in the actual Madison Square Garden rather than The Theater.
“We want the big venue, we’re so blessed to have The Theater,” Humphries said.
“But we would love to have it in the big arena. But we have to have the support from the Americans to come.
“I was at a (New York) Rangers game last year and when they scored it was an amazing atmosphere.”
