West Indies cricket team skipper Roston Chase wasn’t a happy man after the side were handed a 159-run defeat in WI vs AUS 1st Test in Barbados. The Caribbean batter minced no words in slamming third umpire Adrian Holdstock for making some controversial decisions, most of it which went against the hosts. Chase echoed head coach Darren Sammy and demanded for more accountability from the match officials.
“Nothing ever happens to officials”
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Chase pointed out that while players were fined if they went out of the line, nothing happened to the officials for making questionable decisions. He said that the West Indies was frustrated because they were giving it their all in the field but none of the decisions went their way. Chase and Shai Hope were victims of controversial calls made by the 3rd umpire and the Windies batting did suffer because of that.
“It’s frustrating because as players, when we mess up, when we get out of line, we’re penalised harshly. But the officials, nothing ever happens to them. They just have a wrong decision or questionable decision and life just goes on,” Chase said.
The West Indies skipper further pointed out that such wrong decisions could potentially harm the career of a player involved. He called for a penalty to be put in place for having “blatant decisions” go against a team in a contest.
“You’re talking about guys’ careers. One bad decision could make or break a guy’s career. I just think that it should be an even playground in terms of when players step out of line, they’re penalised. I think that there should be some penalty put in place when you have blatant decisions going against you,” Chase added.
West Indies were in a good position to attempt to win the 1st Test on Day 3. However, a five-wicket haul from Josh Hazlewood saw the hosts collapse like a pack of cards. Eventually, Windies were bowled out for 141 runs.
