A family member of a sexual assault victim was charged with killing the sex offender convicted in the case who was released from prison earlier this year, authorities in northern Indiana said.
Nicholas Stanley, 35, was arrested for the murder of Allen Cogswell, also 35, at a motel in Elkhart, approximately 15 miles east of South Bend. The Goshen News reported on Tuesday morning a witness recalled a man with a long gun, identified as Stanley, looking into the window of Cogswell’s motel room before knocking on the door. When Cogswell opened the door, Stanley began shooting, court documents showed.
Multiple witnesses reported seeing a man with a rifle or shotgun fleeing the scene shortly after the shooting. Documents revealed Cogswell, a registered sex offender, was released from prison in May, and Stanley is related to the victim in the case.
Following the shooting, detectives examined a network of license plate cameras and determined an SUV registered to Stanley’s father was in the area around the time of the incident. Surveillance video from nearby businesses was obtained by law enforcement officials who identified Stanley as the person in the video, court documents revealed.
During an interview with Stanley’s father, detectives learned both individuals were aware of the motel room Cogswell was staying in. The father also confirmed a shotgun was missing from the home he shared with his son.
Nicholas Stanley remains at the Elkhart County Jail without bond. An initial hearing has been scheduled for July 3.
