Lewis Capaldi’s Glastonbury return was an emotional, powerful redemption ...Middle East

In fact, it was the punters who were crying, stretching in every direction, singing along and trembling with good will as he returned to the Pyramid Stage “to finish what I couldn’t finish the first time around”. He opened his short, half-hour set saying “second time’s a charm” and it’s a relief and a joy to report that he was right. This redemptive, emotional performance already feels like one of this year’s unforgettable moments, and it’s only day one.

It was heartbreaking to see a star in his prime so thwarted – Capaldi’s debut album had been the biggest-selling record of both 2019 and 2020 in the UK, and he had been open about the toll the pressures of fame had taken on his physical and mental health. When he couldn’t manage to sing his songs, his fans did it for him, and afterwards, he announced a hiatus, and hasn’t been on stage since.

“This has been my f**king goal”, he said, to deafening cheers. “The last few years haven’t been the easiest… But I’ve really missed doing this, and there were times I thought it wouldn’t happen again”. His openness and sense of humour – “I don’t know who’s been f**kin’ telling people,” he laughed, when he saw the size of the crowd – are exactly why he has been beloved. By the time he finished, joking, “I’m f**kin’ back, baby”, and thanking his fans with sincerity, it seemed his confidence was restored.

But that made his victorious return all the more special. Tears at Glastonbury usually come on Sunday, when energy (and serotonin) levels are dangerously depleted. But on this boiling Friday, many in the Pyramid Stage crowd were crying with pride in this man, who in a white T-shirt and black jacket so often feels like an ordinary guy you might chat to in the pub, willing to be this raw and vulnerable on stage all over again.

Every year, this festival gets much attention for its political moments. But the emotional moments like this are the ones that make it feel special, and stay with us the longest. This was only half an hour – but it will have moved many of us for a very long time.
