DENVER (KDVR) — A home and an RV were lost in a brush fire that sparked on Thursday near Rulison and has consumed over 375 acres.
The Garfield County Sheriff's Office said the brush fire started just before 3 p.m. on Thursday near Rulison, west of the White River National Forest.
The fire, dubbed the Hilltop Fire, quickly spread with the heat and wind conditions, and by 9 p.m., the fire had burned through approximately 375 acres and was 5% contained. The sheriff's office said initial reports indicate one home and one RV were lost in the fire.
Glenwood Springs apartment complex evacuated for brush fireOn Thursday, about 20 to 25 houses were evacuated in the area of the intersection of County Road 309 and County Road 320, while others were put on pre-evacuation alert. Some were allowed to grab personal items upon request, but the evacuation orders remained overnight.
Those who were evacuated were sent to the Garfield County Fairgrounds in Rifle and the Parachute Rodeo Grounds.
The fire moved east and south, but the sheriff's office said the cooler nighttime air and slower winds could help with control operations.
Colorado River Fire and Rescue, Grand Valley Fire, Northwest Interagency Fire Management Team and several other fire departments and agencies responded to the fire. Aerial resources were also called to help control the fire.
The sheriff's office said this is a developing incident, and more updates will come as more information is recieved.
