Don’t be angry about Jeff Bezos’s wedding – we all indulge our friends on their big day ...Middle East

Nor are Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife-to-be, the journalist Lauren Sanchez, but it hasn’t stopped them from making the World Heritage City the backdrop for their festivities.

Other attendees, who will include Oprah Winfrey, Mick Jagger, Bill Gates and various Trumps and Kardashians, will reportedly be able to attend a pyjama party and a Great Gatsby-themed event, all before the ceremony itself, which may or may not feature performances by Sir Elton John and Lady Gaga. Around 90 private jets will arrive at local airports with their A-listers cargo before they head into the lagoon city for fun and romance.

To be fair to Bezos and Sanchez, they are aware of this criticism – they’ve donated €3m (£2.5m) to local causes, including funding for an environmental study into the city’s ecosystem. The President of the region called it an act of “extraordinary generosity” and talked of a big boost to the local economy, while the more curmudgeonly point to the fact that one of the richest men in the world can make that amount in a very short time indeed.

Venice receives around 30 million tourists every year, so why are these 200 guests causing such a furore? It’s not as if the city hasn’t hosted big weddings before – including the Clooneys in 2014 – and if it’s about resentment towards the rich, then it’s not like George and Amal aren’t worth a few bob.

There are more beds available for tourists to rent than there are for residents, and Venice is in danger from climate change too: the Floating City is becoming the Sinking City and probably doesn’t need this jamboree at all.

After all, venues like Blenheim Palace, Cliveden House and the Badminton estate are much-loved and very posh venues for weddings here. And even if we don’t all get married at Goodwood or the Old Course at St Andrews, quite a few weddings expect people to dress as if they are.

And before you complain, you remember – that’s their choice, it’s their day. They’re the ones who’ve spent the money and decided they want to share their special day with you and however many others. And if they want to do that in Bali or Berlin, that’s up to them.
