The Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education late Thursday, June 26, approved the 2025-26 fiscal year budget along with a fiscal stabilization plan.
The latter’s passage was a product of ongoing financial troubles that caused the district to be required, by the Los Angeles County Office of Education, to submit a plan of how to address its more than $30 million deficit.
Following a lengthy discussion, the fiscal stabilization plan passed with a 6-1 vote. Trustee Tina Fredericks voted no.
Fredericks expressed frustration at the board of education being in the same position to make cuts every year and said that more fundamental changes need to be made.
Later on in the meeting, the budget was approved unanimously.
Included in the stabilization plan were central office reductions, reduction in special education contribution, reduction in supplies and contracted services, reduction in 120 full-time employees over a three year period and reduction in transportation costs.
The reductions in the plan are mapped out over the next three fiscal years and are due to be a total savings of $83.1 million.
No members of the public spoke during the public comment period for either the budget or fiscal stabilization plan.
