First Alert Weather: Yellow Alert for possible heavy downpours and flash flooding ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We are under a Yellow Alert due to the risk of heavy downpours from thunderstorms that may cause flooding this afternoon and evening. The main area of focus is the Genesee Valley, the Rochester Metro, and areas east and south of Rochester; but due to some model guidance inconsistencies there is more uncertainty on the exact locations. Rainfall rates could reach up to 2″ per hour which is enough to cause flash flooding in some areas, and if the storms start to train like they did last week the rain could go on for hours. Overall however, we are not expecting this potential flooding to be as bad as it was last week. Make sure you download the News10 NBC First Alert Weather app to get instant updates from us as we continue to track these storms throughout the day. You can also use its radar feature to see exactly where the storms are.

When it isn’t raining, expect a mostly cloudy, warm, and very humid day. Temperatures will peak in the 80s and dew points in the 70s, which will make the air feel downright tropical. Another thing to note is thunderstorms will bring some gusty winds that may cause isolated tree damage or power outages.

As mentioned above, there is a good amount of model guidance inconsistencies with this setup, but the potential for flash floods and strong winds is certainly there, so keep that in mind if you’ve got any plans later today and this evening. Stay informed, and remember: Turn around, don’t drown! If a road is flooded, don’t drive through it. The water is always deeper than it looks.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday is looking somewhat dicey with warm temps, humid air, and chances for thunderstorms continuing through the morning, but much less potential for severe weather than there is today. Saturday afternoon and evening will feature decreasing cloud cover and temps going from the low 80s to the low 70s. Dew points will stick in the upper 60s, so have some bug spray handy for any Saturday evening cookouts.

Sunday is the pick of the weekend. Mostly sunny skies, temperatures in the low 80s, dew points staying in the low 60s, and a gentle wind out of the northwest at 5 MPH. Warmth, humidity, rain and thunder returns Monday and Tuesday.
