This year’s Fourth of July celebration promises to be another fun-filled event with various activities throughout the day, starting with the 5K/10K Firecracker Run.

Participants will start out from Canyon High at 7 a.m.

Other events include the Yankee Doodle Dog Show at 9 a.m. on Canyon High School’s Softball Field. The Disneyland-sponsored parade begins at 1 p.m. from Canyon High School’s parking lot and continues down Santa Ana Canyon Road to the Festival Center.

Food booths open at 3 p.m., with entertainment beginning at 5 p.m., at Peralta Park. The fireworks show at Peralta Park will start at 9 p.m.

Fancy Nancy joins this year’s Teddy Bear Picnic

All kids are invited to Fancy Nancy’s Teddy Bear Tea Party on July 12 at Canyon Hills Library.

This special event celebrates 20 years of “Fancy Nancy” books, transforming the annual Teddy Bear Picnic into a tea party!

Special guest will be “Fancy Nancy” illustrator Robin Preiss Glasser.

Join in for an afternoon of fun from noon to 2 p.m. that will include crafts and treats and be the first to experience a special “Fancy Nancy” book reading by Robin from the newest book in the series, which will be available in September. Kids are encouraged to bring along a favorite stuffie for the tea party and get ready to join in this fun event that is sponsored by Friends of Canyon Hills Library.

Catch a concert in the park

Concerts in the Canyon kicks off with a Taylor Swift tribute from the New Romantics on July 10 at Ronald Reagan Park.

This concert series includes:

• July 17: Buffet Band, a Jimmy Buffet Tribute

• July 24: Kalyn and the New Frontier, country western

• July 31: Modern Highway performing Top 40 hits from the ’90s and 2000s.

All concerts begin at 6:30 p.m., and offer an enjoyable summer evening with friends and neighbors and great entertainment. Food trucks, including Kona Ice, Baby’s Burgers, Drizzle and Arenita Gourmet Kitchen, will be on site offering a variety of items for purchase or those attending can bring along their own picnic dinner. There is no charge to attend any of the concerts; however, attendees should bring along a lawn chair or blanket.

Canyon Hills Presbyterian plans Vacation Bible School

The Vacation Bible School Summer Festival at Canyon Hills Presbyterian Church is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon July 21-25 in the church’s Fellowship Hall.

Registration is open to all kids in the community aged 4 (potty trained) to sixth grade.

This year’s theme is “Masterpiece Makers,” which offers kids an amazing experience that focuses on the creation with music, games, Bible stories, crafts, dancing and snacks.

Cost to attend is $30 per family and those interested should register at www.canyonhillspc.org or contact Megan Burgess, children’s ministries director, at meganb@canyonhillspc.org.

Swim lessons open to the community

The Anaheim YMCA is offering various swim sessions this summer at the Canyon High School pool aimed at emphasizing water safety, confidence and lots of fun.

Swim lessons are taught by certified, experienced instructors and classes are available for kids ages 6 months and older.

Saturday sessions consist of four 35-minute lessons with Session II scheduled from June 28 to July 19 and Session III from July 26 to Aug. 16. Weekday Sessions (Monday-Thursday) consist of four 35-minute lessons with Session II scheduled from June 30 to July 3; Session III with eight 35-minutes lessons scheduled from July 7 to 17; Session IV four 35-minute lessons from July 21 to 24 with weekday sessions concluded with eight 35-minute lessons from July 28 to Aug. 7.

Chill and do art at the library

Canyon Hills Library is hosting a “Happy Art Hour for Adults” from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays in the library’s Multi-purpose Room.

This is not a guided art class, but rather an opportunity for participants to bring along their own art projects to work on and spend an hour of relaxation with soothing music to provide a comforting creative environment.
