How did the cancellation rumours start?
Rumours the show was about to be cancelled came via a report in The Daily Star published on Wednesday.
The newspaper quoted an insider as saying: “After years of drama and countless births, Call The Midwife is coming to an end.
“This is the last we’ll see of these much-loved characters.
The news quickly spread and reached BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show on Thursday morning, where host Scott Mills held a special segment marking the end of Call the Midwife playing funereal music and issuing a solemn statement on the show’s demise.
“I am sorry if this is how you are finding out.”
But shortly after the tribute to the programme had ended, Mills was asked by BBC bosses to read out a statement on the future of Call the Midwife.
He then read out the statement put out on social media refuting claims the show was ending.

Production is also under way on series 15, which will feature eight hour-long episodes set in the East End and will begin airing in January 2026.
Heidi Thomas, the show’s creator and writer, said: “The opening of new doors at Nonnatus House feels profoundly emotional, and yet just right.
“But having wept, laughed, and raged my way from 1957 to 1971, I found myself yearning to delve into the deeper past.”
Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, said: “Call the Midwife has been a jewel in the BBC’s crown for well over a decade, and this feels like the perfect time to further expand on the glorious, perfectly realised world that Heidi, Pippa, Annie and the team have created for the show’s millions of passionate and dedicated viewers.
“Whether you’ve been watching from the very start or joined us for one of the more recent series, this is an incredibly exciting time to be a Call the Midwife fan.”
