Evans won 6-4 3-6 6-3 against the American second seed to book his place in the quarter-finals of the ATP 250 tournament.

His victory has come a week after an opening round win at Queen’s against Francis Tiafoe to make it back-to-back top 20 triumphs.

Evans has found a strong run of form ahead of Wimbledon, with the 35-year-old entering this year’s edition as a wildcard.

And the Brit seemed overwhelmed with his efforts as a post-match interview drew tears from his eyes.

“That’s back-to-back wins now, last week and this week, against top 20 players,” the interviewer said.

“How much of that is what you said the other day to me on court here, that you’re just playing because you’re not sure whatever time you’ve got left, and you just want to try and make the most of it?”

“It is, but I know I’ve done the work as well,” Evans replied.

“Once I got some confidence that I knew the work was in the bank… A good friend said…”

Evans started to tear up and despite apologising, the crowd cheered and applauded the British star.

After composing himself, he then continued: “If you’re ready and the door opens, you’ll walk through it. If you’re not, you won’t.

“There’s no truer word for the past two weeks and hopefully there’s some more to come.”

With Wimbledon commencing on June 30, Evans told talkSPORT that he is feeling ready for the third Grand Slam tournament of the year.

“Obviously getting older, and I’ve played Wimbledon a lot. This year, for some reason I had no form coming into it,” he said on Breakfast.

“But then found some form and it is the best I’ve felt going into a championship, which is a little strange but I’m really happy it is that way.

“I’m really looking forward to getting to Wimbledon, but hopefully get the job done here.”

Evans is set to make his tenth appearance at Wimbledon in 2025.

His best finish at the All England Club has come in the third round in 2016, 2019 and 2021.

Wimbledon will also be his first Grand Slam main draw outing of the year after he missed out on Melbourne and Roland Garros.

This will be the first year in which line judges are being replaced by technology, which the All England Club calls ‘sufficiently robust’.
