Ketel Marte at the top as MLB All-Star voting enters final days of Phase 1 ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

Arizona Diamondbacks fans aren’t the only ones who think Ketel Marte should be an All-Star — as more than 1.5 million votes say the same.

The D-backs’ star second baseman is the leading vote-getter among NL second basemen just a few days before Phase 1 of the MLB All-Star voting ends. Other prominent D-backs players like Corbin Carroll and Eugenio Suarez are also in contention for All-Star starting spots.

It’s been a rocky season for the Diamondbacks as a team, but numerous members of the Diamondbacks’ core are establishing themselves among the league’s best at their positions.

Where the Diamondbacks rank among their peers in All-Star voting

Ketel Marte

Marte has received a total of 1,561,235 votes on the latest update MLB provided on Monday. He is nearly 500,000 votes ahead of second-place Tommy Edman from the Dodgers.

The top two vote-getters move onto Phase 2, a head-to-head vote which starts next Monday. Reserves are picked by player ballots and the commissioner’s office at a later date.

With Marte holding a significant lead in the race, all signs are pointing towards Marte making it back-to-back seasons as an All-Star Game starter.

Marte is averaging .310 at the plate with 13 home runs, an OBP of .420 and an OPS of 1.002.

Corbin Carroll

Carroll is the sixth-highest voted outfielder in the NL with 1,019,472 votes. Carroll, in just his third full season as a big leaguer, is hitting .255 with 20 home runs and an OPS of .914.

The top six most-voted outfielders from each league make it to the next round of voting, so at the moment, Carroll is safe but close to the bubble.

The competition is close as Andy Pages of the Dodgers is closing in behind him with a total of 962,219 votes. If Carroll secures his spot after the first round concludes, he will make it to next round where the top three outfielders from each league earn an All-Star spot.

Eugenio Suarez

Suarez is the third-highest voted third basemen in the NL with 538,765. He is just outside the top-two cutoff, trailing the Dodgers’ Max Muncy by a little more than 350,000 votes.

With just a couple days before the Phase 1 ends, it may be difficult for Suarez to overtake Muncy despite his red-hot form in recent weeks. In the last 15 days, Suarez has hit .333 with eight home runs and an OPS of 1.218.

Suarez was recently named NL Player of the Week for his impressive work with the bat, an honor that may garner attention and help add to his All-Star votes.

Other Diamondbacks vote-getters

Gabriel Moreno – 272,518 (sixth among NL catchers)

Josh Naylor – 226,209 (sixth among NL first basemen)

Geraldo Perdomo – 190,966 (sixth among NL shortstops)

Pavin Smith – 108,828 (10th among NL designated hitters)

Although Marte, Carroll and Suarez are the only Diamondbacks with serious chances to become an All-Star starter this year, there are quite a few other D-backs players receiving All-Star votes that deserve recognition.

Moreno, Naylor and Perdomo are all the sixth-highest voted player among their respective positions. All three players have been meaningful contributors for the team despite most likely missing out on the All-Star game.

Phase 1 concludes Thursday at 9 a.m. Fans can still cast a vote at MLB.com before the next round commences.
