A record number of asylum seekers are appealing when their claims are rejected, with their cases taking over a year to be heard, meaning that they stay in accommodation like hotels for longer, The Times reports.
On average, an appeal takes 54 weeks to be heard in the courts. Immigration barrister Colin Yeo told The Times that this timeframe is likely to be even longer now, as the cases entering the system in 2024 when the appeals backlog was 27,133 are the ones taking 54 weeks to be seen.
It comes as over 1,000 people crossed the Channel in small boats on Friday and Saturday, bringing the total so far this year to 18,400, which is 45 per cent higher than last year.
The Government will introduce a mandatory 24-week deadline for all asylum appeals to be heard through its Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, but this will likely only come into effect at the end of the year, and it is unclear how the deadline will work amid a shortage of lawyers and sitting hours.
There were 106,771 asylum seekers receiving such support at the end of March, with 32,345 in hotels and 66,683 in other accommodation like houses and flats.
The Home Office said: “We inherited an asylum system under exceptional pressure and we make no apologies for taking the necessary and immediate action to restore order, increasing asylum decision making and returning nearly 30,000 people with no right to be here.”
