ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Operation Caring Hearts teamed up with two local companies to donate entire pizza pies to anyone in need.
Rebecca Mearns with Operation Caring Hearts filled her car with more than 100 pizzas and gave them away to many within the unhoused community over the course of the evening.
Salvatore’s Pizza of Churchville donated the pies, and Vision Hyundai donated the car, a new Hyundai Tucson.
“She’s truly making a difference, which is why she won this Tucson to begin with. And so if she wants to fill it with 100 pizzas, we’re going to do it,” June Kinsella with Vision Automotive said.
“I won this Hyundai Tucson through Salute to Heroes. And I told them the day I want it, I was going to see how many pizzas I could fit in this vehicle. And I got 104 sponsors,” Mearns said.
That means 104 pizzas to give out to those in need.
Jessica Torres is one of those people. She’s currently homeless and says finding food is just one of the issues homeless people face.
“You just don’t know. We be out here sometimes a day or two. We don’t know if we can go eat again,” Torres said.
Another big issue is city homeless encampment sweeps. Torres said she was just told to leave.
“We have to leave by 4:00. The cops just came. We have to leave. We had to put down our tents, or now we’re going to go to jail. So now we have nowhere to go, you know what I’m saying?” Torres said.
Mearns said Torres’s camp is just one of the targeted sites since about a month ago.
“They’ve done some sweeps of the city. So most of the unhoused are scattered in different locations. So sometimes you have to kind of look for them,” Mearns said.
“I have no family. I’m having problems with my baby daddy. But we all basically like a family here. You know what I’m saying? We all get along, we look out for each other. So now where are we supposed to go now? Because we can’t go any other place, because they told us we can’t go that way, you know what I’m saying? They cleared Dale St., they cleared everywhere. It’s going to be hard,” Torres said.
Tashia, a former homeless woman, said the sweeps are devastating.
“When they come tear everything down, this is all these people have, literally, like, just a little bit of clothes that they might have their name if they have anything…like literally tearing people’s lives away. Little did they know. To some people that’s not anything, but that’s everything she owns,” Tashia said.

Operation Caring Hearts also brought pizza to the Open Door Mission, the House of Mercy and local veteran’s shelters. The group gives out food to the homeless at least once a week. Their next big drive is going to be with JoJo’s Bakery next month.
