We look ahead to this Group B match at the 2025 Club World Cup with our Seattle Sounders vs PSG prediction and preview.
Seattle Sounders vs PSG Stats: The Key Insights
The Opta supercomputer makes PSG favourites to get the win they need to go through to the last 16, with Luis Enrique’s side succeeding in 81.4% of pre-match simulations. This will be the first ever competitive meeting between an MLS side and a French side. Seattle Sounders outshot their opponents 28-10 in the second halves of their first two 2025 Club World Cup Group B games. It was a result few saw coming, but European champions Paris Saint-Germain were beaten on Matchday 2 of the FIFA Club World Cup by Botafogo.
Igor Jesus’ deflected goal was enough to hand the Brazilians a 1-0 win in Los Angeles, and despite a spirited effort to get back into it, PSG just could not find a way past their resolute opponents.
The European champions still have a good chance of qualifying, with a win seeing them advance, while even a draw will be enough if Atlético Madrid don’t beat Botafogo.
They come up against a Seattle Sounders side still searching for their first point in what will be the first ever meeting between a team from MLS and a French side.
The only way Seattle can advance is if they beat PSG by at least three goals and Atlético lose to Botafogo.
The Sounders were beaten by Atléti on MD 2, with a brace from Pablo Barrios and an Axel Witsel goal enough for Diego Simeone’s men, despite Albert Rusnák getting a goal back for Seattle. Rusnák’s goal was his 31st for the Sounders in all competitions. Only Jordan Morris (45) has scored more goals in all competitions for Seattle since Rusnák joined the club in 2022.
PSG’s loss to Botafogo on Thursday ended a run of six straight wins in all competitions. Luis Enrique’s men had scored in 19 straight matches in all competitions prior to that, scoring 51 goals in total. The last time they failing to score in a game was the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie against Liverpool at the Parc des Princes in early March (a 1-0 loss). That ultimately didn’t matter, though, as they went on to win the whole tournament.
Despite having 16 shots against Botafogo, PSG hit the target with just two. That 12.5% shot accuracy was their lowest in any match in which they have attempted 10 or more shots in all competitions since hitting just one of 12 on target against Rennes in a Ligue 1 match in February 2022.
Seattle Sounders like a shot themselves, having outshot their opponents 28-10 in the second half of matches at this Club World Cup, attempting more shots than their opponents after half-time in both matches, albeit they ultimately lost both.
The Sounders usually have an excellent record at Lumen Field, but have now lost three consecutive home matches in all competitions for just the second time since joining MLS in 2009, also doing so from October 2010 to March 2011. Avoiding defeat against the European champions who will surely be looking to right the wrongs of MD 2 will be a big ask.
Brian Schmetzer’s side will need to be alert, as Botafogo were. PSG completed 100 line-breaking passes against the Brazilians, including 58 in the attacking third, but only nine broke through the defensive line. In fact, no PSG player made more than two passes through the Botafogo back line.
Seattle Sounders vs PSG Prediction
The Opta supercomputer strongly fancies PSG (81.4%) to win and seal their place in the last 16. Then again, it thought the same about their game against Botafogo, who won despite the supercomputer giving them just a 6.4% chance of doing so. There may be hope for Seattle after all, despite them winning just 6.9% of pre-match sims. A draw occurs in the remaining 11.7%.
Despite their MD 2 defeat, PSG are very much fancied to progress from Group B, successfully doing so in 86.1% of simulations. Seattle only managed to do so in 0.1% of sims.
