Donna Collins, a jam authority and owner of Jelly Queens, didn’t mince words when it came to the Duchess of Sussex's latest product. “It’s a real disappointment that Meghan is selling a fruit spread, which is what you make when your jam fails,” Collins, who was also a contestant on MasterChef, stated to the Daily Mailin a Saturday, June 21 article. She explained that in the jam industry, a "spread" is essentially just a product that didn’t set properly.
While the product has certainly sparked interest, selling out almost immediately on Friday after it was launched, Collins was quick to point out several flaws, including the use of "conventionally grown apricots" and pectin, a gelling agent commonly associated with runny products. “There’s no excuse for this. It should be perfect,” Collins added.
The spread's release comes on the heels of 43-year-old Markle’s lifestyle brand launch, As Ever, in March 2024, a venture that she teased would include homemade jams. She announced the launch of her new summer products on Instagram with the caption, “Yummies, and honeys, and fruit spreads, oh my! Come explore our summer drop - live now ?.” Per usual, she disabled the comments feature on her post.
