The NCAA released a statement on Sunday afternoon in the shocking aftermath of Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall and first-base coach Matt Schilling being ejected from Game 2 of the College World Series Championship Finals.
In the bottom of the 1st inning, with Coastal Carolina trying to bounce back from Saturday night’s Game 1 loss and stay alive against LSU, Schnall got fiery with the umpires over 3 pitches he believed were already missed. Things got heated, and it turned ugly, with Schnall and Schilling being ejected from the all-important game in Omaha.
Fans and media were shocked and outraged that such ejections could occur so early in such a crucial game, and the NCAA replied to all the noise by putting out the statement.
It explained in part that Schnall continued to argue balls and strikes after a warning, and that behavior shall result in an ejection from the game. Schnall apparently crossed that line immediately with the umpires, who tossed Schnall in the bottom of the 1st inning. Before Schnall could even preside over a game with everything on the line for his program, he was done for the day along with Schilling.
The statement read that Schnall and Schilling kept arguing balls and strikes after being warned. Once that rule was broken after a warning, Schnall and Schilling were ejected. It didn’t matter that it was so early in the game. What mattered was that rule being broken.
The NCAA’s full statement also explained that Schnall would be automatically suspended for the following 2 games and Schilling would automatically be suspended for 1 game. This means that even if Coastal Carolina rallied to win Sunday’s game and force a deciding Game 3, Schnall and Schilling would be suspended and unavailable to coach.
