Five Caltrans employees were recognized Saturday with the Governor’s State Employee Medal of Valor, which is awarded to public servants who perform an act of heroism above and beyond the normal call of duty or at personal risk to their own safety.
For District 8, highway maintenance worker and leadworker John Bedolla and Isai Camino, respectively, were awarded with the silver medal.
They received the distinction for rescuing a mother and her son from an overturned vehicle on Interstate 15 on Jan. 7 of last year. Bedolla helped the woman escape through the front windshield while Camino climbed onto the wreckage to help the boy to safety.
For District 8 covers Riverside and San Bernardino County. The other Caltrans honorees work in districts in Los Angeles, Ventura and Fresno counties.
The Medal of Valor award, which began in 1959, is sponsored by the California Department of Human Resources. Award nominations are made by the employee’s department, reviewed by the State Merit Award Board and then approved by the CalHR Director.
Since the award’s inception, over 800 state employees have received the Medal of Valor. This year, along with the five Caltrans employees, two employees from the California Department of Public Health earned the silver Medal of Valor.
Three employees from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation as well as one employee from the California Highway Patrol were awarded the gold Medal of Valor, which is given for extraordinary acts of heroism.
“We honor their actions that go well beyond the call of duty,” said Gov. Gavin Newsom in a press release. “Despite the odds being stacked against them, they demonstrated remarkable courage and fortitude, navigating complex situations to help someone in need, even if it cost them greatly.”
