The Rookies began as an ABC movie-of-the-week in 1972. It starred Melville, Ontkean and Brown as cadets Mike Danko, Willie Gillis and Terry Webster, respectively, plus Darren McGavin as Sgt. Eddie Ryker. Jennifer Billingsley actually played Jill Danko in the TV movie but was replaced by Jackson for the TV series.
The show explored the real-life situation of many 1970s law enforcement officers who were Vietnam-era military personnel and how that affected their jobs outside of the military. It was created by Rita Lakin and executive produced by famed TV creator Aaron Spelling.
