Firefighters are heroes, even if they don’t want the title
“Hero” — word used easily.
Your favorite sports team has heroes.
When your car broke down yesterday the person who stopped to help just became your new hero.
A hero is someone who exhibits courage, selflessness and integrity, often in the face of adversity or risk, to help others or uphold what they believe is right.
Heroes come in many forms, from those who make grand sacrifices to individuals performing small acts of kindness who make a difference in someone’s life.
Firefighters sometimes hear themselves and their profession described as “heroes.”
This description to a firefighter is usually embarrassing (almost universally except for those who like to TMFMS — “Thank Me For My Service”). Firefighters usually just shrug off the comment and humbly reply “We’re just doing our job.”
Well, yes you are “just doing your job,” but not everybody leaves their loved ones for work/duty, and when they say goodbye know they are likely going to encounter very risky situations, live a shortened life or worse be the last time they will ever see each other alive.
So whether firefighters like, or are even comfortable with the term “hero,” heroes are defined by their actions, values and the impact they have on others.
It’s often a person’s willingness to step up in moments when others might hesitate that sets them apart.
Whether we like the term or not; Firefighters fit this description.
Firefighters are “Heroes.”
So serve honorably and when you leave the Fire Service, leave it better than you found it, and pass on the wisdom you’ve been given to the next generation.
Whether a career or volunteer we do it for the good of our fellow man and community. May God bless you and keep you safe!
Retired Volunteer Firefighter II-EMT Fire Chief Pat Romansik, Eaton
Political cartoons ignore Democrats
You are charged with serving the public. All of the public. I read your paper four days a week. The political cartoons are derogatory toward President Trump and the Republican Party nine times out of 10. The Democrats do laughable things also. Run a few cartoons on their mishaps a few times per month. Remember, karma is active in all things.
