COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A recent analysis has revealed the salary needed to live comfortably in Ohio and each state across the country.
SmartAsset, a financial education company, collected geographic cost of living data from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to find out what salary is needed to comfortably live in each American state in 2025. The study specifically used the 50/30/20 budget rule to determine the amounts, which suggests people allocate 50% of their income to necessities, 30% to discretionary spending and 20% to long-term goals like retirement savings.
“This means being able to afford hobbies, vacations, retirement savings, education funds, and the occasional emergency – in addition to necessities like housing, groceries, transportation and medical expenses,” the study said.
To live comfortably in Ohio in 2025, a single adult needs to make $84,781 annually and a family of four needs to make $220,563, according to the analysis. For single adults, Ohio ranked as the 44th most expensive state, or the seventh cheapest state. When it came the priciest states for a family of four, the Buckeye State's ranking rose to No. 28.
