CHESTERFIELD, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – The trial of a man in the kidnapping and murder of his girlfriend nearly came to an end Wednesday.

Emanuel Bedford is representing himself. He’s accused of killing Deidre Reid in 2021.

"I saw points you were trying to make, and you did a good job of representing yourself I do want to commend you for that," Judge Robert Hood said.

At the last minute, Bedford changed his mind.

The morning was spent learning about Reid and Bedford’s phone records at the Charlotte Greyhound Bus Station on September 3, 2021. We learned that Reid’s phone goes over five hours without any location-based information, but later comes back on the network that night in Girard, Georgia.

“My understanding was that Ms. Reid had left the bus station and gone somewhere else, but the phone she was utilizing was in Augusta,” SLED Special Agent Preston Simpson said. “That’s one of the things as I’m reviewing the records is interesting.”

It’s the same area where parts of her car were found, including a New York Giants license plate and front bumper.

We also saw pictures of Reid’s car, which was found in an Aiken County pond. SLED Special Agent Melinda Worley said the car looked normal at first, besides the seatbelt looped through the steering wheel and leaves on the driver’s side. Mail and two cell phones were found in the glove box. Bedford pushed to ask about a knife in the trunk.

“We processed it with LCD and got negative results on it,” Worley said.

However, blood with Reid’s DNA was found on and behind the passenger seat, door handle, and visor.

Wednesday finished with James Reid, Deidre Reid’s brother, taking the stand. We learned in 2013 that he helped her move out of her home to get away from a situation involving Bedford.

“She literally started grabbing stuff, she was glad that we came,” James said.

He spoke about his sister preparing for an upcoming medical procedure, but also how she was getting ready to move into a new home.

Bedford asked Reid in cross-examination what he would do if he had a chance to restart the investigation and start re-searching for his sister.

“Lock you up,” James said.

Bedford asked James about a shooting that he said had happened the week before his sister’s disappearance. Bedford said she may have been involved with it.

“I don’t know nothing about no shooting,” James said.

One of Reid’s daughters is expected to take the stand on Thursday. Right now, Bedford does not have any witnesses set to testify.

Queen City News will be in the courtroom when the trial begins at 9:30 a.m.
