Ariel Chapman, 35, told The i Paper he and his partner were meant to fly back to Manchester from Tel Aviv on Monday, but instead spent the night in a bomb shelter.

“You can’t see anything when you’re in a shelter, so you feel extremely vulnerable. You can hear booms and you just hope a missile doesn’t land near or on your building.

The conflict between Israel and Iran has forced both countries to close their airspaces, leaving thousands stranded at the epicentre of a military crisis that has no end in sight.

But with an evacuation plan yet to be announced, Mr Chapman said Britons in Israel have been left “completely abandoned”.

“We don’t know when we’re going to leave or how we’re going to leave.

Mr Chapman told The i Paper he travelled to Israel to visit friends and attend the Tel Aviv Pride event, which was set to take place on Friday.

“It wasn’t the holiday experience we expected,” Mr Chapman said.

As a gay couple, Mr Chapman said he and his partner fear facing persecution if they evacuate through Egypt or Jordan.

“We know there’s a lot of discrimination and harassment.

Intense Israeli airstrikes targeted Iran’s capital early on Wednesday in a conflict that a human rights group said had killed at least 585 people across Iran and wounded 1,326 others.

Iran has not been publishing regular death tolls during the conflict and has minimised casualties in the past.

An Foreign Office spokesperson said: “This is a distressing time for British nationals in the region, their safety and security is our top priority.

“We have launched register your presence so that we can share important information on the situation and leaving the country, and we are sending specialist teams to Egypt and Jordan to bolster our presence near the border, which has already been supporting British Nationals on the ground.

The UK embassy in Israel has also been contacted for a comment.
