Liverpool agree £116m Wirtz deal

Sport by : (PRESSBEE) -

Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen for the transfer of Florian Wirtz, valued at £116 million, marks a significant milestone in the club's history . This transfer fee not only surpasses previous records set by players such as Moisés Caicedo but also establishes Wirtz as Liverpool's most expensive signing to date, eclipsing the acquisition of Darwin Núñez in 2022. Such financial commitments reflect Liverpool's ambition to strengthen their squad and compete at the highest levels within European football.

The fee for the 22-year-old includes a guaranteed £100m and a further £16m in add-ons.

Those bonus payments would only become payable if the Reds achieve a sustained level of success - which would then make it a British record.

Chelsea also brought in Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo for an initial £100m fee, which could rise to £115m.

Fellow goalkeeper Armin Pesci, 20, has also arrived from Hungarian side Puskas Akademia, with the Reds securing new competition and support for first-choice stopper Alisson Becker after long-time deputy Caoimhin Kelleher’s £18m switch to Brentford.

Left-back stalwart Andy Robertson could yet leave amid the pursuit of Kerkez, having now been linked with Atletico Madrid as he enters the final year of his Liverpool contract. If he stays, then understudy Kostas Tsimikas could depart instead, Sky Sports claim, with Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Leeds all linked with the Greek defender.

This acquisition is particularly noteworthy given the competitive nature of the transfer market. Liverpool successfully outmaneuvered other elite clubs such as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid to secure Wirtz’s services . As he prepares to undergo medical examinations and finalize a five-year contract, fans eagerly anticipate how his skill set will enhance an already formidable squad . This strategic move not only reflects Liverpool's ambition but also highlights their commitment to strengthening their team for future competitions.
