HENRIETTA, N.Y. – There are still no new positive cases of the measles in Monroe County, according to the county health department. They are tracking people who had contact with the unvaccinated child who tested positive.
The child was only in Monroe County for a short time, staying at the DoubleTree Hotel in Henrietta on June 6 and 7 before testing positive for measles in Florida.
News10NBC Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean checked on the plan at Strong Memorial Hospital if a case ended up there.
The plan at Strong is to have a digital record of the patient including their symptoms, vaccination status and where they have been. The hospital would isolate them in a negative-pressure room and isolate that room after the patient leaves.
“While I wasn’t happy to hear there was a local case I feel like locally we’re pretty well prepared for it,” said Dr. Tim Flerlage, a pediatric infectious disease doctor at URMC.
Lynne Brown, Director of Infection Prevention at URMC, showed Brean the hospital’s game plan for a measles case.
“We want to be able to identify someone who is suspicious to have measles, separate them from the general population in a negative-pressure isolation room,” Brown said. “And if one of those rooms is unavailable, we put them in a private room with a mask on and the door shut.”
The child who tested positive stayed at the Double Tree Hotel on Jefferson Road. The county health department says the child arrived late on Friday, June 6th and left early in a private car on Saturday, June 7th.
“We don’t anticipate they had enough time to go visit the Strong Museum,” said Dr. Marielena Velez de Brown with the Monroe County Public Health Department.
Dr. Velez de Brown says the child was unvaccinated. In Monroe County, 88% of children under two have at least one MMR shot.
Berkeley Brean, News10NBC: “Are you worried the future when it comes to measles?”
Dr. Tim Flerlage: “It’s a very infectious virus that spreads through the air and people who are susceptible have a high likelihood of being infected and so it is something that gives us concern as an infection prevention community but we are working out best to make sure out patients and staff stay safe.”
The county health department believes the risk of exposure is isolated to the hotel.
The CDC says “As of June 12, 2025, a total of 1,197 confirmed measles cases were reported by 35 jurisdictions: Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City, New York State, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.”
