Dark horse Andres Gomez wins PBA50 Senior U.S. Open at Highland Park Lanes, his first major title as a pro ...Saudi Arabia

Andres Gomez might have been a bit of a dark horse against some of the most successful bowlers in the sport’s vast history this past week at Highland Park Lanes in Greeley.

But by the time the dust cleared Monday night, no one shined brighter.

For the third consecutive year, Highland played host to the PBA50 Senior U.S. Open. And for the first time, Gomez claimed a PBA50 tour title.

It was also his first title in a major event, at any level.

“It is incredible. When I won my first PBA title in 2012, it was insane being from Colombia and coming to the U.S. in 1995 to pursue a career on the PBA,” Gomez said, according to a PBA news release. “But to win a major, against Brad Angelo and Pete Weber, who has won so many U.S. Opens — I have to rank this as the best moment after all of the injuries. … I had cloudy eyes. I rank this as my biggest ever accomplishment in my bowling career.”

Gomez, who is from Bogotá, Colombia, joined the PBA Tour in 2005 and won three tournaments at that level but never a major event. He joined the PBA50 — featuring bowlers 50 years and older — in 2023.

Gomez has dealt with an Achilles’ heel since this past year, according to the PBA news release. That injury forced him to withdraw from multiple tournaments.

But during the past week, Gomez outshined many of the biggest names the sport has ever seen, ultimately defeating the stepladder championship’s top seed, Brian Dennis, 221-214 in the last match of the night, the top rung of the stepladder.

Gomez was the third seed of the five-bowler stepladder finals. He also defeated Angelo (226-203) and Weber (186-176) in the stepladder finals.

He wasn’t atop the leaderboard of the five-day event until the very end. He steadily climbed throughout the nearly weeklong affair.

He pocketed $15,000 with his first-place finish among the 135-bowler field. Rounding out the top 5 were Dennis ($8,000), Weber ($6,000), Angelo ($5,000) and John Janawicz ($4,000), who was the previous year’s Senior U.S. Open champion.

Gomez didn’t clinch his title until the 10th frame of his match with Dennis. With his title-clinching strike, he bolted down the bowling center, springing up for a little leap, and celebrated with sheer emotion.

“I am pretty calm when I bowl, but when I need a strike to win, I celebrate it, because those moments don’t come every other week to win a PBA title,” Gomez told pba.com. “So, I have got to celebrate them and show the people the emotion that I am going through.”
