Borussia Dortmund are strong favourites with the Opta supercomputer to start their Club World Cup campaign with a win. The model sees them beat Fluminense in 70.7% of its pre-match simulations. Fluminense ended their most recent league campaign with 16 defeats, their most in a single season since 2019. Dortmund are newcomers to the Club World Cup, but Fluminense appeared in the most recent edition of the competition, albeit in its previous guise. In 2023, they beat Al Ahly in the semi-final before losing the final against Manchester City (4-0).
The Brazilian side qualified for this Club World Cup tournament as winners of the 2023 Copa Libertadores, beating Boca Juniors 2-1 after extra-time to win the competition for the first time.
Since then, though, their form has gone downhill. In the 2024 Brazilian Série A, Fluminense ended their season with 16 defeats across 38 matches, their most in a single campaign since 2019. That culminated in a 13th-place finish, their lowest in five years.
While the 2024-25 season wasn’t all rosy for Dortmund, they do enter this tournament in excellent form. They’ve won each of their last six games in all competitions, scoring at least three goals in every match and 20 in total across that time.
While they ultimately lost the tie overall, that run started with a 3-1 win over Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Serhou Guirassy scored a hat-trick in that game for BVB and finished as joint-top scorer of the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League season alongside Raphinha, netting a club record 13 goals.
The Guinean has scored in each of his last six appearances in all competitions; he’s never scored in seven matches in a row for a top-flight team.

Borussia Dortmund are the Opta supercomputer’s favourites for this match, with the German side winning 70.7% of the 10,000 pre-match simulations. Fluminense won just 11.9% of the time.
Similarly, Dortmund are also the clear favourites win Group F, doing so in 75.2% of the Opta supercomputer’s simulations. They qualified for the knockout stages in 93.0% of the sims.
The fight to join them looks an open one, though. Fluminense currently have a 39.9% probability of qualifying for the last 16, just behind Mamelodi Sundowns (46.3%).
