In a matter of seconds, David Lilley went from pure ecstasy to perplexed agony.
The 49-year-old was in action against Elliott Slessor at the 2023 UK Championship qualifiers.
World Snooker TourLilley went into his clash against Slessor with high hopes[/caption]With a spot at the Barbican in the offing, both players could ill afford any slip-ups.
Unfortunately for Lilley, that’s exactly what transpired at a crucial moment in the contest.
The 49-year-old found himself down 3-1 in the first-to-six contest in a less-than-ideal start.
However, he soon had a golden chance to reduce the deficit to just one frame.
But what followed next had the 49-year-old equally stunned and devastated.
Lilley leaned over the table and produced a stellar shot to pot the green.
He also made sure to put enough backspin on the white so it would retreat back towards the reds.
But in the process of leaning over, the chalk fell out of Lilley’s pocket and onto the baize.
And when the white ball came spinning back, it caught the chalk and meant Lilley had committed a foul.
Commentator Steven Hallworth was utterly baffled upon watching the moment unfold.

“He pots the green and his chalk comes out of his pocket and he’s screwed straight into it.
“Time must have stood still there for David Lilley.
“You cannot catch your breath here at the Morningside Arena.
“You think you have seen everything there is to see in this game, and you haven’t. That is unbelievable.”
Unsurprisingly, Lilley cut a devastated figure as he bowed his head and leaned over the table.

Sadly for Lilley, his UK Championship qualification journey ended at the hands of Slessor who prevailed 6-3.
As for Lilley, he must have been left to wonder what could have been, had his chalk not fallen out of his pocket.
