EAST CLEVELAND — East Cleveland police announced Thursday afternoon that Nathaniel C. Crockett, 28, of Cleveland, has been charged with aggravated murder in the death of Juvar King Sr., a 46-year-old Warren man reported missing in February.
Nathaniel C. Crockett, 28, of Cleveland, was initially arrested for arson involving a vehicle registered to a relative of King and last driven by him.
Crockett remains in custody at the Cuyahoga County Jail and is scheduled to appear in East Cleveland court on Monday, June 16, for his initial hearing on the aggravated murder charge. The East Cleveland Police Department continues to seek information from the public and can be reached at 216-681-2162.
The announcement came during a press conference at East Cleveland City Hall, where police detailed the ongoing investigation.
Police Chief Kenneth Lundy said Crockett was arrested Thursday morning at the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court during a pretrial hearing for a separate felony arson charge. The arson charge, filed in March, stemmed from a Feb. 4, 2025, vehicle fire in the 9300 block of Sherwood Road in Cleveland. The burned 2007 Buick Lacrosse belonged to a relative of King, who was last seen driving it that day, according to aTribune Chronicle report.
King’s body was discovered March 17, 2025, at 5:38 p.m. on the back porch of an abandoned home in the 1800 block of Chapman Avenue, near Terrace Road, by a construction crew cleaning the property, Lundy said.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the body as King’s. The Warren Police Department had reported King missing on Feb. 5 after a relative noted he had not been heard from in more than 24 hours and failed to pick up his daughters.
Lundy described the investigation as “lengthy” and ongoing, with other potential suspects involved.
“There’s lots more information to come,” he said, declining to provide further details to protect the investigation.
Detective Commander Joseph Marche confirmed Crockett was served with the murder warrant during his arson pretrial and had been a person of interest since the vehicle fire.
Ida King, Juvar’s sister, spoke briefly at the press conference.
“This has been a long journey for my family and myself, and we’re seeking all the justice that we deserve,” she said, addressing the need to hold all involved parties accountable.
East Cleveland Mayor Sandra Morgan expressed condolences to King’s family and praised the collaborative efforts of the East Cleveland Police Department, Warren Police Department, Cleveland Division of Police Homicide and Arson Units, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office and Norton Fire Division of Police Canine Rescue.
“No man is an island,” Morgan said, noting the partnerships that led to the arrest.
