“The greatest mark of a father is how he treats his children when no one is looking.” – Anon
Powerful quotes about fathers
The quote “Noble fathers have noble children” is attributed to the Greek tragedian Euripides. It’s often used in the context of Father’s Day and fatherhood, highlighting the influence a father has on his children.
The quote, “Any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad,” is attributed to Anne Geddes. Geddes is a well-known photographer, particularly for her work with infants.
The quote, “It doesn’t matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was,” was said by Anne Sexton, a Pulitzer Prize-winning American poet.
What is the story?
Father’s Day was founded in Spokane, Washington, at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. This year Father’s Day is June 15.

Coyote Dam Walk & Kayak Rentals at the Lake
Coyote Dam was built in 1958 for flood control on the Russian River and water storage for domestic use. Numerous Mendocino County residents have fond memories of summers spent on the water, either fishing, boating or simply hiking miles of established trails around the lake. Currently, the water level at Lake Mendocino is higher than it has been in seven years.
High water or not, one of the most popular lake activities requires no special equipment or planning. A casual stroll across the 3,500’ long Coyote Dam attracts walkers, joggers, and plenty of dog walkers throughout the week. The Dam’s paved walking path has ADA accessibility, restrooms, and canine friend amenities (poop bags and bins). Visitors enjoy a beautiful view of the Ukiah Valley and the lake.
Adjacent to the dam, the south boat launch is a popular destination during the summer months, and the Army Corps of Engineers, which manages all lake facilities, has plans to install a Destination Park just above the dam near the parking area. The Corps has been working with the Greater Ukiah Business & Tourism Alliance (GUBTA) to develop a branding campaign and marketing program for the lake itself. New welcome and directional signage has already been installed, and groundbreaking for a new nine-acre Destination Park near the dam’s parking area will happen soon.
As part of the marketing plan, GUBTA recently funded a pilot kayak and paddleboard rental program. A self-service rental kiosk is now installed near Lake Mendocino’s north boat launch. Users need only scan a QR code to access the watercraft, then make the short walk to the boat launch and the water. Rates are $25 for two hours of fun, and rental fees include paddles and life jackets.
Visitors can now rent kayaks + SUP’s directly at Lake Mendocino right from their phone via the Rent.Fun self-serve rental system. Go to: visitukiah.com/lake-mendocino-kayak-rentals/
