The actress and filmmaker recently took to her Instagram Stories to share coverage of her latest film, What Happened to Doris?, which made its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 20. But tucked into the middle of her story, she shared an image of herself wearing the sunniest, shortest yellow sundress under a bridge in Atlanta, decked out with a 360-degree vibrant mural.
Heather Graham Channels Her ‘Austin Powers’ Era
The colors and groovy, laid-back feel of the shot recall Graham in the 1999 film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. In the spoof sequel, Graham plays CIA operative Felicity Shagwell, a confident and street-smart agent who teams up with Austin Powers after Dr. Evil steals his mojo.
Since her groovy role in the Mike Myers franchise, Graham has become a sort of scream queen, appearing in plenty of genre fare, from Suitable Flesh and Place of Bones to They Will Kill You and What Happened to Doris?
‘What Happened to Doris?’ Tells a Chilling True Story
The latter is based on the real-life case of Doris Bither, a California woman who reported being violently assaulted by an unseen force in her Culver City home in 1974. UCLA investigators later documented alleged paranormal activity at the house. The case eventually inspired the 1982 horror film The Entity.
What Happened to Doris? stars Graham as Bither and is currently making its way through the festival circuit, with GVN handling distribution.
Speaking about the ’70s-set film, Graham talked about portraying Bither.
“I tried to just build her whole life story with all the defining moments with her kids and the guys she fell in love with and her parents,” she said.
Bither was also a smoker, a trait Graham took issue with but ultimately adopted to give the role authenticity.
“I’m like, do I have to smoke this much?” she said, about how she asked director Nick Simon if she really needed to smoke as much as the screenplay called for. “He’s like, ‘Yeah, you gotta smoke.’”
She didn’t stop when she ventured down south, because, ahem, Graham is still smokin’ in that yellow number.
