Liverpool are in talks with Giovanni van Bronckhorst to become their assistant head coach, talkSPORT understands.

The former Netherlands international is poised to replace John Heitinga, who departed Anfield to take charge of Ajax.

He will join Sipke Hulshoff and Aaron Briggs in Reds head coach Arne Slot’s backroom staff.

Van Bronckhorst’s most recent role was with Turkish club Besiktas, but he was sacked after just 20 games at the helm last November.

Prior to his Turkish adventure, the 50-year-old was in charge at Scottish giants Rangers.

During his stint at Ibrox, the Dutchman led Rangers to a Europa League final but fell agonisingly short as they were beaten on penalties by Eintracht Frankfurt.

He was later axed in November 2022 following a 1-1 draw with St. Mirren.

Van Bronckhorst began his managerial career in May 2015 with Dutch side Feyenoord, where he made over 230 appearances as a player across two separate spells.

Although he never won the Eredivisie as a player, the 106-time Dutch international led Feyenoord to the league title in his second season in charge.

Van Bronckhorst also steered Feyenoord to two KNVB Cups, which is the equivalent of the FA Cup in Dutch football.

The 50-year-old made the transition to coaching after a glittering 17-year career as a player.

He made his senior debut in 1993 for RKC Waalwijk on loan from Feyenoord before he returned to the club the following season.

The midfielder then moved to Rangers in 1998, where he made 117 appearances and won five trophies.

Van Bronckhorst’s impressive displays north of the border landed him a switch to English heavyweights Arsenal in 2001.

He featured 64 times for the Gunners, and helped them to a Premier League title in 2002 and an FA Cup the following season.

Van Bronckhorst’s career then took him to Barcelona, where he spent four seasons between 2003 and 2007.

At the Catalan giants, Van Bronckhorst won two LaLiga titles as well as the Champions League in 2005/06 against his former employers Arsenal.

He was also part of the Netherlands squad that finished runners-up at the 2010 World Cup against Spain, scoring one of the goals of the tournament in their semi-final win over Uruguay.

Van Bronckhorst joins a Liverpool side hoping to retain their Premier League crown after they finished ten points ahead of Arsenal.

The Reds have not won back-to-back league titles since the 1981/82 and 1982/83 campaigns.

However, Liverpool are not going to give up their title easily as they have already added Jeremie Frimpong and are closing in on the signing of left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

Slot’s side are also nearing an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen over a fee for Julian Wirtz, with their latest bid of £113million rejected by the German side.
