The Cleveland Browns have moved a step closer to building a brand new stadium.
Much debate has raged over the plans for the NFL franchise to move away from Huntington Bank Field, which is regarded as one of Northeast Ohio’s greatest assets, sitting on the shore of Lake Erie.
The Browns have received boost to plans for moving away from Huntington Bank FieldGettyThe stadium and team have long served as an economic hub for the downtown area, in good times and bad, with thousands of fans making their way through the streets of the city on a weekly basis to cheer on the Browns.
But now, a new site has been proposed.
The team wants to move to Brook Park, a suburb south-west of Cleveland, and build a new domed stadium.
Costs for the project are estimated at $2.4billion, and a move has proved far from straightforward to this point.
The Browns and the city have previously filed lawsuits against each other, with the latter trying to slow a move, or stop it altogether.
In a lawsuit filed in January 2025, the city asked a judge to compel the team’s owners to do one of two things: Either negotiate a deal with Cleveland to leave for neighboring Brook Park, or offer the team up for sale to local buyers.
That fight is centered around the Modell law, state legislation that is designed to make it harder for professional sports teams to leave taxpayer-supported facilities.
The law is colloquially named after former Browns’ owner Art Modell, who moved the original team to Baltimore in 1996.
In February, current Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and Haslam Sports Group (HSG) outlined their vision for the new enclosed stadium, and proposed a funding model for the new Huntington Bank Field.
Per a news realise, the stadium portion of the project will cost around $2.4bn, and HSG is seeking a 50/50 public and private partnership.
The Browns have shared $2.4bn stadium relocation plansGetty The new stadium would have a roof, and be located in Brook ParkCleveland BrownsThe private funding is worth $1.2bn, as well as any cost overruns, while the public funding sought is also $1.2bn, but there are three different areas that make up that proposed component — the city of Brook Park, Cuyahoga County and the state of Ohio.
The project calls for bond-financed contributions of $422m from Brook Park, $178m from Cuyahoga County and $600m from the state of Ohio that would be paid back with tax revenue primarily generated by the project.
On Wednesday, June 11, the Browns received some good news relating to one part of that proposed public funding.
According to NBC Sports, citing local Cleveland radio station 92.3 the fan, the Ohio Senate has passed a budget that includes $600m in state money for the Browns stadium.
“The Senate’s plan borrows against the $1.7 billion pool of unclaimed funds,” the report reads.
“The House has proposed bonds, and the governor wants to increase gambling taxes.
Browns owners, Jimmy and Dee Haslam, prefer a move over stadium renovationsGetty“Regardless, all three bodies agree that $600 million is the magic number for the state’s contribution.”
While much work still needs to be done, Cleveland’s WKYC news channel described the budget as ‘a big step to bringing a Browns domed stadium to Brook Park’.
Amid plans to relocate south-west, the Browns owners were last year offered $461m by the city to renovate their lakefront home and keep the stadium downtown.
The current Huntington Bank Field was built in 1999, when the team returned as an expansion franchise.
While it has been upgraded, major traffic issues and a parking shortage still remain.
Amid plans to relocate, the Browns will return to NFL action in September.
The first game of the 2025 NFL season will see them take on Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals at Huntington Bank Field.
Plenty is to be decided on the field, too, with high-profile rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders arriving after a shock draft slide.
Rookie QB Sanders could one day be playing in the new Browns stadiumGettyIn the coming months, he will challenge the likes of Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, for a spot on the roster next season.
