The Kansas City Chiefs have a huge decision to make about their NFL future.

Arrowhead Stadium, which dates back to 1972, is located in Missouri.

Nearby Kansas would love to become the new home of the Chiefs, who feature Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, and count global pop music superstar Taylor Swift as their biggest fan.

With two states competing for the Chiefs’ future, a team with ‘Kansas City’ at the core of its name must decide whether to remain in Missouri or cross state lines and enjoy a new state-of-the-art $3 billion stadium in Kansas.

That decision has only become more complicated in recent days, after the Missouri legislature voted to pass a bill that will pay for half of the cost of an estimated $1.1 billion upgrade to Arrowhead Stadium.

Before the Missouri legislature stepped up, there was strong belief that the Chiefs would move to Kansas to enjoy a new domed stadium that could cost $3bn to build, and feature everything from outdoor concerts to a future Super Bowl.

Andy Reid, Kelce and Mahomes have found themselves caught in the middle of a contentious back-and-forth battle, with two states hoping to secure the Chiefs’ future.

Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl winner, has already made his feelings known about his special bond with the fans and residents of Kansas City.

“I love it, man. I love the people,” Mahomes said in 2024 on the Impaulsive podcast with Logan Paul.

“The people are what make the city and they embrace you.”

Still, if the Chiefs don’t get what they want from Missouri, they could easily cross state lines and receive a huge stadium upgrade in Kansas.

That was a real possibility last summer, and Missouri has been forced to play last-minute catch up to prevent the Chiefs from leaving.

MLB‘s Kansas City Royals are also facing an uncertain future, since their stadium — which opened its doors in 1973 — sits next door to Arrowhead.

“What I think is, how it’s gonna play out — through all the twists and turns — I think the Chiefs are going to end up over on the Kansas side of the state line,” Blair Kerkhoff, a Kansas City Star sports writer who covers the Chiefs, exclusively told talkSPORT.

“I think the Royals will find a way to work something out with Jackson County in the city of Kansas City to be in downtown Kansas City.

“Baseball would stay in Missouri. The football (NFL) moves to Kansas.”

Right now, the Chiefs are preparing for training camp and still processing a Super Bowl LIX blowout defeat to Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans.

“I feel like I didn’t play to my standard, especially the struggles that I had early in the season,” Mahomes told talkSPORT.

“There’s things that I have to get better at, and they kind of showed today on the biggest stage.”

But when it comes to playing in Kansas City and being backed by a sold-out Arrowhead Stadium crowd, it appears that Mahomes made his preference clear last year.

“You can walk down the street and people come up and are like ‘We love what you do, we love your work,’ ” Mahomes said on Impaulsive.

“They want to let you have a great day they’re not trying to take pictures. The people make the city.

“I do love the fans. The best part of Kansas City is that they love it but they embrace everybody that comes to the games and they tailgate it. There’s not a ton to do so they really enjoy those football games.”

The Chiefs’ lease at Arrowhead runs through 2031.

But if Mahomes and Kelce are going to move to Kansas, the decision will arrive soon and construction on a new $3bn domed stadium would quickly follow.

“Arrowhead is home for me,” Kelce said. “It’s a part of my heart, playing in that stadium.

“But the fans want what the fans want. We play for them. I think it’s up to them.”
