Fort Bragg-Salmon Fishing

I guess you could kinda say that the recreational ocean salmon fishing season opened last weekend?  For 2025, CDFW has put in place in-season management and harvest limits, which are new concepts in management of commercial and recreational ocean salmon fisheries off California. Given the low abundance forecasts and spawner returns in recent years, it is crucial that any limited salmon fishing ultimately authorized be managed to ensure most of the fish return to the river this fall. Use of these strategies in 2025 ocean fisheries is expected to keep catches within pre-season projections. For the ocean recreational salmon season within the California KMZ, which runs from the Oregon-California border to latitude 40°10’ N and includes Humboldt County. There are only 4 dates that salmon fishing will be allowed.  June 5-8; July 3-6; July 31-August 3; August 28-31.

* NOTE: I n season action may be taken to close open days when total harvest is approaching a statewide harvest guideline of 6,500 Chinook.  I know this is not great news for us weekend anglers. But it is a wee-bit better than nothing at all?

Blue Lakes

Ahhhh, Blue Lakes, our summer time escape.  This lake is a jewel, even though the trout fishin’ isn’t on fire like it was earlier, it is still pretty good.  The gang that fish from the shore along Hwy. 20 have been catching their fair share of Rainbows.  By far, the early morning hours is the BEST time to fish.  Using Powerbait has been the primary choice of most shoreline trout fishermen.  The folks that have had the opportunity to get on the water with a put-put boat have been doing well trolling with an Action Disc or flasher trailing it with a worm or fly.  I think the hidden treasure is the Bass fishing.  Even though Blue Lakes is known for trout, the Bass bite can be pretty good.  Casting around docks and submersed timber with a Watermellon Candy Senko, Brushhog, or Sweet Beaver will get you hooked up.

Clearlake

“The green algae monster” of Clear Lake is once again is starting to show it’s ugly head…Yup, Clear Lake at one time was clear. Really!  Hence it’s name.  Researching the algae history of Clear Lake will show that the current algae problem is man made.  Before 1925, Clear Lake was truly clear.  Road building and wetlands reclamation projects (Rodman’s Slough) in the 1920’s and 1930’s increased the sedimentation rates. The increased sediment killed off most of the natural root growing plants.  The blue/green algae scum has been a perennial problem ever since. (Thanks to Gregory A. Giusti, University of California Cooperative Extension, March 2009.)  So with all that being said, really you have a week or two before the lake gets pretty bad.

* Let’s talk fishing…  I think that the warm weather we have been having along with the full moon, has messed with the bass’s heads.  Tournament anglers are having to fish hard to bring in five fish that weigh over twenty pounds.  Once the weather settles into some kind of pattern, the bass fishin’ will once again be what we all expect.  Still your best bet is to drop-shot or flip a Senko under docks and along the edges of tules and weed lines.

Lake Pillsbury

The lake up on the mountain is the most beautiful lake in our area.  Even though the road is not the greatest, it is still worth the trip, especially if you can put together a few days to go camping.  The trout fishin’ has been rated fair to good lately.  The warmer water temperatures has the trout down in deeper water.  Troll the east side of the lake with your down rigger set at 20 to 25 feet.  Use a flasher and trail it with a nightcrawler.  The bass fishing has been pretty good.  Most anglers are catching four to twelve bass per outing.  Top water early in the morning, then change to fishing plastics, swim baits or crank baits.  No matter what species of fish you are after, the early morning hours is the best.

Lake Mendocino

Our backyard lake has truly taken on a new fishing identity.  With the decline of stripers, and the re-introduction of trout, the largemouth and smallmouth bass have been coming on strong.  So far this year, Teresa and I have caught more quality bass in Lake Mendocino than in previous years.  This weekend the fishin’ will be tough though.  If you are going to be successful, you’ve gotta get out of bed early and be on the water by 5:30 a.m.  For the first hour or so, try top water fishin’ a PopR or a Spittin’ Image.  Then switch to drop-shottin’ an Aarons Magic Roboworm.

Mill Creek Pond

The Upper Mill Creek Pond will probably be one of the most crowded fishin’ locations this week.  It will be very important of get there early in the morning to get your favorite spot.  Most of the trout have been caught using shrimp, Salmon eggs, powerbait  or worms with a sliding bobber.

Please practice catch and release. Be kind and be safe!
