Crowd booed broadcaster’s question in Dustin Johnson’s US Open trophy interview after rules controversy ...Middle East

It’s been almost ten years since Dustin Johnson won his first major championship.

Johnson won the US Open back in 2016 at Oakmont Country Club.

However, it didn’t come without a bit of controversy.

A controversy that the crowd didn’t care for, when Joe Buck asked Johnson about it during his trophy presentation.

“I want to talk to you about what was, at least at the time, a controversy when you were standing on the tee at 12,” Buck said.

“You were told by members of the USGA that there was potentially a one-stroke penalty coming your way for the ball moving on the green at five.

“Talk us through that conversation and what your mindset…”

The crowd interrupted with a flurry of boos.

Johnson and Buck both cracked smiles.

“How were you able to put that aside and go about doing your job, winning this championship?” Buck asked.

“It’s something they said we were going to look at, when I got done,” Johnson responded.

“I just tried to focus on what I was doing, not worried about the penalty stroke.

“And just play golf from there to the house.”

Johnson finished at four-under-par, three strokes ahead of Jim Furyk, Shane Lowry and Scott Piercy.

However, it really should have been four strokes if not for the controversy.

What had happened was Johnson took a practice stroke on the fifth green during the final round.

He grounded his putter next to the ball and then positioned his blade behind the ball (without grounding it) before pulling it away as the ball moved slightly backward.

To be clear, Johnson never made contact with the ball.

He had done nothing to make the ball move and that is exactly what he told the rules official.

All seemed fine.

However, on the 12th tee box, an official came up to Johnson and told him that he might be penalized a stroke for the incident.

There wouldn’t be a decision until the round was complete.

At that point, Johnson had a slim two-stroke lead.

And he now had to wrestle with the thought that he may or may not be receiving a penalty after completing the round.

Normally that is a huge mental weight.

However, Johnson didn’t seem fazed.

His lead only grew from there, and even after being penalized at the end, he won with room to spare.

Johnson now returns to the same course where he won his first major all those years ago.

And there’s no doubt he’s hoping for the same outcome.

Albeit, probably without the controversy this time around.
