Martin Castillo is one of only eight boxers to have beaten Floyd Mayweather in an amateur fight.
It is an elite feat which was never accomplished in the professional ranks, as Mayweather retired with a perfect unblemished 50-0 record.
Mayweather was a top amateur, having represented Team USA in the OlympicsGettyBut when stepping in the ring with a less experienced Mayweather, Castillo completed what would turn out to be a truly historic feat.
The pair met on a Mexico vs USA dual meet in Las Vegas in 1994.
And interest was heightened in their contest with the boxing fraternity in town to watch Roy Jones Jr‘s showdown with James Toney the following day.
Many have tried and failed to undo the elite IQ and seemingly invincible defence of ‘Money’, who had one of the best skill sets ever seen in the squared circle.
But Castillo came with the perfect game plan, and left the expectant crowd reeling.
The Mexican decided to simply emulate Mayweather’s tricky style, which he revealed left his opponent frustrated and angry.
He explained: “The best way I can explain to you what I did is that I fought like Mayweather
“I tried to do everything he did, because in that time it was easy for me to fight in that kind of boxing.
“Hit and move, hit and move. Then I’d put my hands down and throw a jab and then move.
” I just played with him. I tried to make him feel mad because he couldn’t hit me. Playing dirty, kind of like that.”
Castillo beat Mayweather in 1994 in the amateur ranksCastillo was an elite technician himself and his skills were certainly validated in his victory over the future legend Mayweather.
The Mexican himself was one of eight fighters to have beaten the eventual perfect 50-0 icon.
But he was the only one to go on and replicate the glory in his own professional career.
He went on to reign as a WBA and IBF super flyweight world champion, and even reached the pound-for-pound mix.
Castillo retired with a superb record of 35-4 before retiring in 2010, seven years prior to Mayweather.
Despite his success, he never reached the commercial stardom of Mayweather, who was a one of a kind superstar.
Mayweather was never beaten as a professional – so Castillo is in rare companyGettyMayweather went on to bank earnings in excess of $1.2 billion from his stellar time in the spotlight.
So his amateur losses amounted for nothing as his list of achievements are rarely matched in the sport’s vast history.
He went on to beat a set of true fellow greats, including Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez.
And his showdown with Pacquiao in 2015 was declared the ‘Fight Of The Century’ and it became the most watched pay-per-view event in history.
Nonetheless, Castillo’s own legacy will go on and he was delighted with how his own career turned out.
He added: “I never thought I was going to become a world champion and go to the Olympic games and be one of the most famous fighters in the world.
“I feel good, not only for beating Mayweather, but because I’ve done a lot of things in my life.”
