ROCHESTER, N.Y. – On Sunday, the intersection of Avenue D and Hollenbeck Street in the El Camino neighborhood received a safety-focused makeover.
Residents teamed up with street architects to paint the pavement and add traffic control features. The redesign aimed to create a more people-centered environment.
“We’ve got flowers being planted, we also have some benches being installed so people can actually sit here,” said Lourdes Sharp, project manager. “The idea is to calm the traffic so people feel more comfortable and safe traveling on here. A lot of our streets are really autocentric, designed for cars, so we wanted this redesign to be people-centered.”
The ideas for the redesign were developed during a community workshop in February.
