Jon Jones claims Francis Ngannou is interested in sharing the cage with him in the not-so-distant future.
Ngannou left the UFC for PFL in January 2023 while he was still the company’s heavyweight champion.
Jones vs Ngannou would arguably be the biggest heavyweight fight of all timeHowever, his coach Eric Nicksick sparked rumours of a possible return to MMA‘s premier promotion earlier this week when he suggested his client would be open to re-signing with his former employer.
“I know that he’s been kind of asking for that Deontay Wilder fight, and if that’s something that comes up, great,” Nicksick told Home of Fight.
“I just feel like the heavyweight division as a whole is kind of in shambles, and I think that if we can somehow, someway get this back together, there are so many options for Francis.
“Not only in the UFC, but just around. I think that he can help bridge the gap that the UFC is lacking in its star power when it comes to the heavyweight division.
“I think enough time has passed. I would love to see somehow, some way that they can mend these fences and get back in competing in the UFC.”
And now the man who won the title Ngannou vacated, Jones, claims there is legs in a possible fight between the pair.
“I’m hearing Francis Ngannou is still interested… now we’re talking,” ‘Bones’ tweeted.
“That’s a real super fight. A clash of champions, not just hype.
“He held the UFC belt, I’ve defended mine for over a decade. Two kings from different roads.
“Not just one legend facing a mouth that’s hot right now, but two real legacies colliding.
Interim champion Tom Aspinall has been waiting for his shot at Jonesgetty“That’s the kind of fight that actually adds something special to my story. At least from my point of view.”
It is more bad news for interim title holder Tom Aspinall, who has been chasing a unification fight with Jones to no avail.
Jones has shown very little interest in fighting the Brit, who has been sidelined since last July, waiting for his rival to accept the bout that MMA fans are clamouring to see.
The expectation is that Aspinall will be elevated to full champion in the coming days when the UFC eventually strip Jones.
That will free Jones up to face Ngannou in a super fight, if he so wishes.
Ngannou has two fights remaining on his PFL deal, but the Cameroonian cage fighter has only competed once during his two years with the company.
Jones claims Ngannou is ‘interested’ in facing himAFP - GettyIn order for the fight to happen, the PFL and UFC would have to co-promote a show together.
UFC president Dana White has been averse to the idea in the past, although he may cave if Saudi powerbroker Turki Alalshikh places enough money on the table.
The chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority has had the fight at the top of his MMA wishlist for some time.
