Greeley City Councilman Johnny Olson announced this week that he will run for reelection as the Ward 3 council member this November.
Ward 3 encompasses the area southwest of the intersection of 35th Avenue and 10th Street, extending to the western border of Greeley. This area of the city lies adjacent to where the proposed West Greeley Cascadia project is expected to be constructed, a project that Olson strongly supports.
“This initiative is more than just a development plan; it’s a historic, economy-shaping opportunity that will define the next chapter of Greeley’s growth,” Olson said in his campaign announcement. “We need qualified, experienced council members at the table to ensure this project moves forward responsibly and in a way that truly benefits our residents.”
Safety, accountability, infrastructure and smart growth were Olson’s guiding ideals during his time in office and will continue to be so if elected for another term, according to the announcement. His primary focus was on making public safety a top priority, a goal evident in his recent advocacy for a public safety tax that was removed from the ballot in 2024 but could resurface in November, he added.
“I’m committed to supporting our first responders — our police officers, firefighters, and emergency personnel — who are the backbone of our community,” Olson said in the announcement. “They deserve the resources and support needed to keep Greeley safe. A secure city is a thriving city, and we must never take that for granted.”
Olson also made waves during a city council work session earlier this year, when he put the city’s public works department on the spot, criticizing them for what he said was a lackluster performance thus far on the MERGE project. This project aims to address the dangerous intersections along the U.S. 34 Bypass at 35th and 47th avenues and construct new, safer interchanges.
As a former regional director for the Colorado Department of Transportation, Olson has consistently demonstrated a passion for infrastructure in city government. If reelected, Olson has said he will continue to push for the MERGE project, along with other projects such as the Weld County Road 17 interchange improvements and the 83rd Avenue expansion.
Olson also made it clear he intends to give the appropriate attention to existing infrastructure. Olson said he’ll continue to advocate for increased investment in street maintenance, water and storm sewer improvements, sidewalk repairs and other efforts that preserve and extend the life of the city’s existing infrastructure.
Currently, Olson is running unopposed for the Ward 3 seat.
Election Day is Nov. 4.
