In June, the city of Greeley will be the stage for three separate political demonstrations against the current status of President Donald Trump’s administration, ranging from funding cuts at the Department of Veterans Affairs to a perceived increase in authoritarian excesses and corruption.
From 4-6 p.m. June 6, a demonstration will be held at Bittersweet Park in Greeley, located at the northwest corner of 35th Avenue and 16th Street, to honor veterans, oppose cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and protest federal worker firings that affect veterans. This demonstration, called Stand Up for Veterans, will coincide with the 81st anniversary of D-Day, which commemorates the day when Allied forces invaded Normandy.
The demonstration, organized by Greeley-Weld Indivisible — a group that describes itself as dedicated to electing progressive leaders, rebuilding our democracy and defeating the Trump agenda — will also accept food donations at the event. In addition to food donations, the event will also protest plans to shrink the VA by 15%, resulting in the loss of 83,000 employees.
Following the demonstration at Bittersweet Park, another demonstration will take place 10 a.m.-noon June 7 at the Weld County Courthouse, at 901 9th Ave. This demonstration, organized by the Courthouse Steps group, continues its promise to protest on the first Saturday of every month against the current state of the United States since Trump took office for a second term in January.
In April, the group had numbered nearly 400 people who had gathered to express their dissatisfaction with the proposed staffing cuts and threats of loss of funding: education, diversity equity and inclusion initiatives, veterans, LGBTQ and Social Security programs. Since then, the protests have lacked a concrete focus and have become a platform in which residents can voice their concerns about current events under the Trump Administration.
On June 14, another demonstration, called No Kings, will take place in Greeley at the south side of Lincoln Park from 10:00 a.m.-noon. The demonstration is being advertised as a “national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies,” according to the event posting on Indivisible’s website.
