A quartet of new baby bison is now occupying the zoo. The Oakland Zoo called its new occupants “red dogs” due to the color of their coats.
Bison are North America’s largest land mammals. According to the zoo, bison play a crucial role in shaping biodiversity.
Due to extreme sport hunting, in the late 1800s, bison were on the verge of extinction, per the Oakland Zoo. In 1906, there were only around 1,000 wild and captive bison. There are now around 450,000 bison due to conservation efforts.
